4 Tips for Winter Eye Care After LASIK

Girl With Snowboard and Goggles

When people think of eye care they tend to picture themselves on a hot beach in the summer with aviator shades on to block harmful UV rays from damaging the eyes. Let’s face it – in Cleveland, we always like to picture ourselves on a beach, especially when it’s cold outside! But, wintertime has its own unique set of risks for the eyes, and it’s important to take care of your eyes, especially if you have had LASIK surgery in the past. So, let’s look at some ways you can keep those Cleveland eyes shining all winter long.

1. Bust those aviators out.
One of the advantages of LASIK is that you can wear sunglasses with no prescription. Take full advantage of that this winter. Use sunglasses when you are driving or when you are out playing in the snow to block snow glare and protect your eyes from UV rays. Sunglasses aren’t just for summer anymore.

2. Keep your eyes moisturized.
The dangers of winter and eye care are just outside. In the wintertime, we crank up the heat, which can lead to dry conditions in our homes, workspaces, and cars. At home, use humidifiers when possible to keep moisture in the air. Blinking more helps, and if you need to, keep some eye drops handy to keep your eyes moist.

3. Give them a break.
More time indoors means more time looking at screens. Keep the 20/20/20 rule in mind. Every twenty minutes take twenty seconds to focus on something 20 feet away. This will keep your eyes fresh and help give them a break causing less fatigue and stress.

4. Light up your space.
In the winter, it gets dark earlier, so make sure that you are keeping your areas well lit, especially where you are working or reading.
