Topple the Turkey: Serve These Eye-Friendly Food Options This Thanksgiving!

Planning your Turkey Day feast?

Include these superfoods that can help improve your eye health!

At LASIK Vision Centers of Cleveland, we make a living correcting vision, but that doesn’t mean we want you to have poor eye health. LASIK actually has better long-term results when the eye is healthy, so we thought we would give you some ideas on foods you can serve your Cleveland Thanksgiving guests to help them improve the health of their eyes!

Appetizer Course

Leafy greens can help strengthen eye health, because they contain lutein and zeaxanthin along with a healthy dose of Vitamin C. Kale, spinach, and collard greens are all great vitamin sources. A nice amuse-bouche salad would be a great way to kick off your meal.

Nuts and legumes are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, so adding in some walnuts and cashews is a good way to protect your loved ones from age-related eye damage.

Main Course

Although turkeys have been vital to the development of LASIK procedures, eating turkey at Thanksgiving is so colonial. Why not switch up to America’s favorite new holiday tradition: The Turkey Day Fish Fry! The pilgrims served fish at the original Thanksgiving and fish are another source of those omega-3 fatty acids that protect your eyes against the effects of aging. Serve up some tuna, trout, or even a can or two of sardines and soak in the praise you’ll receive for saving your family from another turkey-induced coma.

Dessert

Yes, pumpkin pie is delicious, but why not get in touch with the roots of Thanksgiving and munch on citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, and grapefruits. Okay, we’re not sure that the pilgrims had access to citrus at that first event, but they had some kind of fruit, and these options have Vitamin C which is an antioxidant that the American Optometric Association (AOA) recommends to fight eye damage!

The truth is that we probably aren’t going to forego the traditional turkey and stuffing this year. But on Black Friday, you can start a new “eye-friendly” tradition of eating some foods that are great for ocular health! And, don’t forget to book your LASIK consultation! What a great present for that hard-to-shop-for relative!
